About the Newcomers and Alumni Club
The objective of the Newcomers Club of New Bern is to help newcomers integrate into their new community by providing opportunities to meet other newcomers, to learn about local and regional resources and history; and to identify ways of contributing to its life, vitality and organizations, both charitable and civic.
The Newcomers Club was started under the premise
of a three-year membership. That allowed the Club never to
become "closed" because of size. As the third year of the
Club's existence approached, the graduating group requested and
helped organize the Alumni Group, since many members did not want to
leave the social group that gave them so much enjoyment.
The Alumni Group is basically the same as Newcomers – allowing
people to socialize in the activities that they enjoy with many of
the same people. Many activities are the same, some are
similar, and others are different. Both groups are there to
offer what its members want, thus some differences.
The Alumni Group has approximately 160 residences in its membership,
which comes to about 250 members, some being couples and others
being singles. We publish a monthly Newsletter, which is in
the process of going to email, with the option of hard copy.
Our general meeting night is the second Wednesday of each month, but
in some months, we do not have a general meeting, and instead, offer
a social, such as our Ice Cream Social or Valentine Brunch. We
offer activities, such as Book Club, Bridge, Dominoes, Mahjong,
Crafting, Boating, Golf and Wine
Tasting. We have been inviting the Alumni Group to
some of our socials and activities in recent years, such as Dining
Out, Singles and Outdoor Adventure. Every year, we add more
combined efforts, which open more opportunities for new and current
friendships.
